Between 1783 and 1878, the Newcomb family of Stamford, funded by the Stamford Mercury’s profits, amassed one of the most significant property portfolios in the town’s history. Remarkably, this estate of almost 120 shops and houses, including more than forty Grade II and Grade II* listed buildings, passed through eight generations. In this new publication, John Daffurn chronologically catalogues the Newcomb family’s land and property acquisitions, beginning with Richard Newcomb Sr’s marriage in 1783. Each entry provides information on previous owners, early tenants, current values, and other interesting facts, supported by over eighty illustrations. Today, the value of the Newcomb estate, excluding commercial properties on the High Street and elsewhere, would exceed £40 million, making this a compelling story of wealth, heritage and the architectural fabric of Stamford.
